What Benwerrin Counselling Does

Many people think that counselling under a Mental Health Care Plan can only be provided by a psychologist or clinical psychologist. This is not true. I am an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW). AMHSWs are recognised providers with Medicare Australia and other programs, delivering clinical social work services in mental health settings and utilising a range of evidence-based strategies. AMHSWs work with people across the lifespan (including children, adults and older persons) and provide a unique contribution to the mental health space in their holistic approach to working with a person. The advanced training that is expected of AMHSW prepares and provides them with the skills for working with people with very complex presentations and co-morbidities. AMHSWs are highly trained and educated professionals, meeting some of the highest standards of professional regulation in Australia. If you would like more information on the standards which govern my practice- please go to : www.aasw.asn.au/information-for-the-community/information-for-the-community

My professional background is in trauma informed practice and have highly specialist skills in family intervention. Prior to moving into private practice, I was a Senior Caseworker with Department of Family and Community Services in Maitland. Prior to this I was the Social Work Manager for Upper Hunter Community Health and before that was a Senior Clinical Social Worker in Palliative Care and Chronic Disease with Cessnock Community Health. I am deeply committed to providing high quality counselling for people who cannot afford to access this and who do not meet the criteria of NSW Health services.’

What do social workers do?

The social work profession in Australia is broad and diverse but consistent to all practice is a commitment to human rights and social justice. Social workers work with individuals, families, groups and communities in the context of their physical, social and cultural environments, their past and current experiences, and their cultural and belief systems.

In all contexts, social workers maintain a dual focus on both assisting with and improving human wellbeing and identifying and addressing any external issues (known as system or structural issues) that may impact on wellbeing or may create inequality, injustice and discrimination.

Social workers may undertake roles in casework, counselling, advocacy, community engagement and development and social action to address issues at both the personal and social level. Social workers also work in areas such as policy development, education and research particularly around issues of social justice, disadvantage and the marginalisation of people in their communities or in society.

We are highly experienced and are trained to help you find lasting solutions for your difficulties. There is no need to continuing suffering in silience, speak to Rohan today on 0408697403.
